What is Microneedling?

What is Microneedling?

This year we added microneedling to our practice, and since then, I’ve gotten many questions about it: Does it hurt? What are the benefits? How much does it cost?

In this blog post, I will answer all of these questions and more for you.

What is microneedling?

Many different microneedling devices are on the market. After doing a lot of research, we decided to purchase the Collagen P.I.N. The Collagen P.I.N. uses a 36 needle tip to  create a controlled wound to the skin. This does not sound good, I know! Just hear me out for a minute.

These controlled wounds – also known as micro channels – fill with collagen. Collagen and elastin are both responsible for keeping our skin looking youthful. As we age, the development of both collagen and elastin decreases, which is why our skin begins to get wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, etc.

By stimulating collagen production, we are not only preventing future damage, but we are also treating damage that has already occurred. This is a process so you should not expect to have all of your concerns resolved within the first treatment. If you have deep damage that has resulted over years, then you will need more treatments.

(We do have alternative treatments for faster results. Our board certified plastic surgeons are able to do injections, deep laser treatments or surgery depending on the desired results, down time and budget.)

Microneedling is used as an:

  • Acne scarring treatment. We can make scarring such as ice pick scarring look a lot less noticeable though they are very difficult to resolve. (I am still trying to find a treatment that will eliminate deep scars completely. In some cases, a Fraxel or ProFractional laser procedure may be more beneficial, which would need to be performed by one of our physicians.)
  • Anti-aging treatment. By creating microchannels, serums and creams can be absorbed into the skin more effectively. Over time, fine lines and wrinkles can be significantly reduced or eliminated.

What are the benefits of the Collagen P.I.N.?

The Collagen P.I.N. has the ability to be applied to areas that are difficult to treat with peels or lasers. The under eyes area is a great example. Many of my patients love the Nano and Weekender LaserPeels ™. Unfortunately, I am unable to treat close to the eyes with laser. With the Collagen P.I.N., I am able to safely treat this area.

Individuals interested in avoiding harsh chemicals used in peels may find that microneedling is a safe and effective alternative. Patients with darker skin tones are at a higher risk of experiencing pigmentation from laser treatments, so this is a great alternative for them as well.

What can I expect during the treatment?

Treated areas will have a local anesthetic applied to reduce any discomfort. I have treated some patients who state that they could not feel anything at all. I have others who have admitted to slight discomfort. Every patient’s pain tolerance is different, and the amount of pain will also vary depending on how aggressive your treatment is.

I will apply a hyaluronic acid serum or vitamin C serum as a glide. Our device rapidly and repeatedly penetrates the skin as it slowly moves across the surface. The depth of the needle penetration will be customizable for each patient depending on their goals and tolerance.

There is no downtime or recovery period, but some redness may occur after treatment. It usually subsides by the next day if you have a lighter treatment. If we do an aggressive treatment, you can expect much more redness, swelling and peeling that can last from four days to a week. Patients can return to most regular activities soon after. It can take one to two weeks for the effects of the treatment to become noticeable because it is a natural process for your skin and takes time to produce more collagen and elastin.

Home care is very important. If you are going to invest in treatments like microneedling, you should use proper skin care products at home to enhance your results. (This advice really goes for all other treatments.) You will not want to use harsh products on your skin immediately following a deep treatment like this. We have a post care kit that has everything you will need. These products are recommended to be used for at least four days post treatment. After those four days, you may resume your previous skin care routine unless otherwise stated.

Our post care kit consists of four easy steps: cleanser, serum, moisturizer and sunscreen. We sell the post care kit separately; however, if you purchase a package of three treatments upfront, you will receive one post care kit at no additional charge.

How much do treatments cost?

A single treatment of the full face and neck is $300. A package of three treatments is $750 and includes a post care kit at no cost (a $120 value!).

I am capable of doing all areas of the body. The amount of time and area being covered will determine the cost of those treatments. I offer free consultations, which I recommend taking advantage of to discuss treatments in detail.

How many treatments will I need?

Patients will likely need multiple treatments to get the desired results. Treatments are usually administered every four weeks. For prevention of aging skin, three or four treatments are generally sufficient. To treat stretch marks and acne scarring, six treatments minimum will be necessary. Yearly maintenance treatments are often times a good idea as well.
